Testarossa Velodrome Challenge and Masters Keirin World Championships

Testarossa Velodrome Challenge and
Masters Keirin World Championships

The Testarossa Velodrome Challenge was held on June 11 and 12 at the Hellyer Velodrome in San Jose, California and featured the inaugural Masters Keirin World Championships. Over 300 competitors came from all parts of the United States as well as Australia, New Zealand and Puerto Rico. Jame Carney, who put on a racing how-to clinic said, “Last year was my first time back to Hellyer since 1998 and I had a great time. Rick put on a super event and all of the top track riders in the U.S. should support these big events when we can.”

Elite Sprint Events

Men

Jimmy Watkins, who set Hellyer’s track record (10.83) at last year’s edition and a month later the US record (9.876), proved again to be the fastest man over the flying 200m. But young David Espinoza came in a very close second with T.J. Mathieson not far behind. Hellyer’s fast men Peter Billington and Sam Milroy, as well as Kiwi Andy Williams were still in striking distance.

Montano Velo Keirin
Andy Williams who took the position behind the motor, lead the field into turn 3 on Hellyer’s 335m track. Jimmy Watkins attacked in turn 4 and went to the front with one lap to go. At the 200m line Watkins had three bike lengths over Andy Williams who was at the head of the pack. Watkins had a commanding win, with Williams a clear second, while local fast man Sam Milroy took third over all-rounder Jame Carney, who came in fourth, with the podium being rounded out by Daniel Sullivan. Watkins said, “I felt pretty strong in my Keirin heat and was confident for the final. You never know what's going to happen in the Keirin so I wasn't expecting to win by a large margin. It just worked out for me.”

Milroy Sprints
The 12-man sprint tournament led to a final paring of Jimmy Watkins v. David Espinoza for gold and Pete Billington v. Kevin Mansker for bronze. David Espinoza beat Watkins in two exciting photo-finish runs. Billington beat Kevin Mansker two rides to one in the best of three, and T.J. Mathieson won the race for fifth. Watkins had this to say about the sprint final, “I knew that it would be close in the sprint final since our times were .01 apart but I thought I would win. I felt like I rode well but Espinosa just came around me both rides. He did a good job.” Hopefully we’ll see a rematch at Elite Nationals, if not before.

Women
A much improved Dana Feiss emerged as the dominating force in the women’s sprint events. Her flying 200m time set her 2 tenths apart from the competition. But Tela Crane, Jen Featheringill, Australia’s all-rounder Laura McCaughey and Hellyer’s junior Ruth Winder also went below the 13 second mark.

Masters Keirin World Championships
Testarossa Velodrome Challenge featured the inaugural Masters Keirin World Championships. Competitors came from across the US and Puerto Rico to compete for the rainbow bulls-eye jersey, filling up 4 heats.

While most riders had participated in Saturday morning’s sprint tournament, Matthew Diefenbach saved himself exclusively for the keirin races.

Hellyer local Dave McCook took the motor with Diefenbach on his wheel. Diefenbach attacked on the home straight and lead the pack into the final lap leading McCook and Andrew Weathers.

Going into turn 3 for the final time, McCook counterattacked but wasn’t able to come around Diefenbach. Coming into the home straight McCook was on Diefenbach’s hip, but Diefenbach went out of the sprinter’s lane. While crossing the finish line first, Diefenbach was relegated to second place and McCook took home the rainbow bull’s eye jersey.

Endurance Events
SportVelo Points Race
In the most exciting race of Friday night, Peanut Butter & Co. Twenty 12’s Hanan Alves-Hyde escaped the field after about 6 laps and what looked like a suicide flyer. Alves-Hyde was later joined by Vanderkitten’s Jen Reither, a recent addition to the NorCal track community, and the two worked together to lap the field. In the final sprint, Alves-Hyde’s teammate Shelley Evans took the sprint over McCaughey to seal third place.

Over 20 women rolled off the rail at the start, including a number of riders gaining their first experience in an elite competition. As riders were called out each lap the speed stayed high and the final three, Aussie Laura McCaughey, Hellyerite Beth Newell and Seattle’s Jen Triplett sprinted to the line with McCaughey edging out Newell for the win.

Testarossa Scratch
In a race full of men with speed and experience, Carney, the wily veteran, again crossed the line in 1st place. Bissell’s Ben Jacques-Maynes used Saturday night’s racing as a tune-up for this weekend’s Nature Valley and was on the podium in 3rd place. Carney said, “The scratch race was a little nervy since I had no idea if Ben was going to rip my legs off with attacks or if the other guy was stronger or faster than me. I had to play it cautious with my turns so I had a big bullet at the end.”

John Peckham Memorial Points Race
Prior to the race Hellyer Board President and teammate of John Peckham, Brian Peterson said a few words to the crowd, “John’s incredible talent, infectious smile and positive attitude were impossible to miss on or off the bike and will always be remembered.” In another big, competitive field, Carney ran up the points to easily take 1st place. Jacques-Mayes came in a comfortable 2nd, and 3rd and 4th places came down to the final sprint with Kevin Schiller edging out junior rider Daniel Farinha. Ian Moir edged out Jason Allen for the final podium spot.

After a crash midway through the race that saw two teams exit the race, the team of Jason Allen and Jame Carney went up a lap to wrap up the win. Kevin Schiller and Adam Smith had a good lead for 2nd place over the teams of Brent Emhoff/Zak Kovalcik and Eric Balfus/Steve Pelaez, with Emhoff/Kovalcik taking Balfus/Pelaez in the final sprint for 3rd place. Veterans Patrick Briggs and Dave McCook completed the podium.

Men

This sprint tournament was a reminder that match sprint is all about the fight man against man and not a time trial with an attached tournament. However at the beginning it seemed to be all so clear: only three riders Lei Zhang, Michaël d'Almeida and François Pervis stayed below the 10.3 sec line and it looked like those three would fight outthe podiums positions.

The round of the last 16th everthing went according to plan. However there was a sign of big things to come: 8th seeded German Max Levy was beating 9th placed Australian Jason Niblett with a time of 9.926 for the last 200m which was 1/2 a second faster than his time during qualification.

The quarter final was then the end for the fast Chinese. Max Levy was defeating
Lei Zhang and Kiwi Eddy Dawkins the fourth fastest qualifier Miao Zhang. D'Almeida and Pervis joined them in the semi finals.

Now Eddy Dawkins was beating the German Keirin World Champion Levy while d'Almeida turned out to be the faster Frenchman of the night.

In the final Eddy Dawkins beat d'Almeida for his biggest win yet and Pervis won the Cofidis internal fight for bronze over Max Levy (who had just joined Cofidis a couple of weeks ago).

Keirin

Women

All the strong riders made it into the 2nd round even though some had to take the rep detour. Round 2 then had a number of surprises: the French duo Clara Sanchez and Claire Sandie and the 500 m time trial winner Willy Kanis didn't make it. But there were some up-and-coming riders in the final: Malayasia's Fatehah Mustapa (who was dq-ed in the final) and the dutch youngster Agnes Ronner. World Champion Shuang Guo took the win with Germany's Miriam Welte and Wai Sze Lee joining her on the podium.

Qualification

This was an interesting qualification. The Chinese team was very strong in front of the home crowd, closely followed by the Australian Jayco team the French squat. Disappointing the Germans (who still won the over world cup in the team sprint) and the Cofidis team with German Keirin World Champion Max Levy.
